Noir City, an annual film festival put on by the foundation in its home city of San Francisco, is making its Portland debut this September 20 thru 22 at the Hollywood Theatre. Friday September 20 through the Sunday the 22nd, the full lineup of titles boasts the Film Noir Foundation’s latest preservation efforts, Try and Get Me! (1951), and High Tide (1947), along with an impeccable selection of vintage noir titles including Alias Nick Beal (1949), Street of Chance (1942), The Come On (1956), and more!
Hosted by the Czar of Noir himself, Eddie Muller, Noir City Portland will present these films on beautiful 35mm prints! None of these films are available on DVD, so don’t miss this incredibly rare opportunity.
Friday, Sept. 20 7:30 PM TRY AND GET ME (aka THE SOUND OF FURY) (1950) A man who is down on his luck falls in with a criminal. Starring Frank Lovejoy, Kathleen Ryan and Lloyd Bridges. (85 min)
9:30 PM SLEEP MY LOVE (1948) Directed by Douglas Sirk. Alison Courtland (Claudette Colbert) wakes up in the middle of the night on board a train, but she cannot remember how she got there. Danger and suspense quickly ensue! Co-starring Robert Cummings and Don Ameche. (97 min)
Saturday, Sept. 21 3:30 PM THE GREAT GATSBY (1949) In this “adaptation” of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, a Jazz Age bootlegger learns the hard way about the wages of sin. Starring Alan Ladd, Betty Field and Shelly Winters. (91 min)
7:30 PM REPEAT PERFORMANCE (1947) Actress Sheila Page murders her two-timing boyfriend and goes to her friend John Friday for help. He gives it to her in the form of granting her a chance to relive the events prior to the shooting. Will the same thing happen again? Starring Joan Leslie and Louis Hayward. (91 min)

7:00 PM STREET OF CHANCE (1942) Gothic murder mystery starring Burgess Meredith...In this Cornell Woolrich thriller, a man's memory is recovered after being injured by falling construction material. Discovering a year-long lapse, he returns to his old life and discovers a lot of mysterious happenings.(74 min)
8:45 PM HIGH TIDE (1947) A reporter hires a bodyguard to protect him from a gang boss he has been investigating. After a car accident traps the two of them inside the car with the tide coming in, the reporter recounts for his bodyguard the circumstances leading up to their predicament. (72 min)
Eddie Muller is a writer, filmmaker, and noted noir historian. His books include Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir; Dark City Dames: The Wicked Women of Film Noir, and The Art of Noir: Posters and Graphics from the Classic Film Noir Era. He has recorded numerous audio commentaries for DVD reissues of classic noir films. Muller’s crime fiction debut, The Distance was named “Best First Novel” of 2002 by the Private Eye Writers of America. He is co-author of the bestseller Tab Hunter Confidential.
